Five Code Sections Rule Out Free RV Camping in the Florida Keys

There is no free RV camping in the Florida Keys. Monroe County, the City of Key West and Florida State Parks each close the gap a boondocker would look for, so every night your RV spends in the Keys is a paid campsite.

Can you park an RV overnight on US-1 in the Keys?

Not in unincorporated Monroe County. Sec. 17-3 bans camping on the US-1 right of way between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. It also says that parking a recreational vehicle there during those hours "shall be presumed to constitute camping". The same ban covers the county's arterial and collector streets.

"Presumed" is the word that does the work. You do not have to be asleep inside. A parked RV is enough.

Can you camp in a Keys county park or on a beach?

No. Sec. 17-4 bans camping on any county-owned property, parks and recreation areas included, "at all times of day and night". The county's own FAQ answers the question in one word, then points at the state parks.

Can you boondock at a Florida state park?

No. The Florida State Parks FAQ asks whether any state park permits boondocking, dispersed camping or staying overnight in a day-use parking lot, and answers "No." The campsite is the only place an RV spends the night in a state park.

Where can you park an RV in Key West?

Not on the street, and not overnight anywhere public. Three sections of the Key West code cover it.

  • Sec. 70-130. No one may lodge in or about any vehicle, RV included, on a public street, park, right of way, parking lot or other public property in the city.
  • Sec. 70-462. An RV, or an RV and vehicle combination, over 20 feet long or 7 feet wide may not park on any city street, whether occupied or not.
  • Sec. 70-463. No overnight parking in any public parking area.

The city's parking page adds that oversized vehicles may use designated lots by day, never overnight. It does not name a lot that takes RVs, and the Old Town Park N Ride garage says "No RVs". Getting into Old Town without the RV covers the bus and the bike instead.

What about Islamorada, Marathon, Layton and Key Colony Beach?

We did not research their codes, and the county code above covers only unincorporated Monroe County. Do not plan a night in any of the four on the assumption that it is allowed. Ask the city clerk first.

What does the cheapest legal night cost?

Of the Keys parks that publish an RV rate, the state parks are the lowest: $36 a night plus tax, a $7 nightly utility fee for RVs, and a $6.70 reservation fee on each booking. That is $43 a night before tax.

A week at a state park is 7 nights at $43, or $301, plus the $6.70 reservation fee: $307.70 before tax. In Key West, Leo's Campground publishes standard RV sites from $75 a night, by season and length. Most private parks publish no rate at all.

State parks cap a stay at 14 nights. Past that, the cheaper night is no longer on offer, and the monthly RV rental guide has the private park rates.

Why does a free night matter if you have a site booked?

Because it is the fallback that does not exist. Grassy Key accepts no arrivals after 4:30 p.m., and Bluewater Key turns late arrivals away. A delivery that reaches the park after the office closes has no free place to wait, and no source we read permits one. Agree the drop time with the host before you accept the booking; RV delivery in the Florida Keys lists each park's cutoff.

Is there a free dump station?

Curry Hammock and Bahia Honda's Buttonwood loop have dump stations for their campers. We found no primary source for a dump station open to the public anywhere in the Keys.

Plan it this way

  1. Book a campsite for every night of the trip before you book the RV.
  2. Set the delivery or arrival time inside the park's check-in hours.
  3. In Key West, leave the RV at the campground and go into town without it. The Key West RV parks are on Stock Island and beyond.
  4. Add the sites, the 12.5% campsite tax and the tolls up for your own dates on the trip cost calculator.
