RV camping at Curry Hammock State Park

Reviewed by Ben Kiser, RV rental operator and fleet consultant.

The easiest state park in the Keys for a big rig: 70 ft maximum, 28 gravel sites with 50 amp and water, and a dump station. The catch is the 14-night cap and the three nights out after it, which a delivered trailer cannot do on its own.

What the 14-night cap costs a delivered trailer

Length is not the problem here: all 75 listings whose delivery reaches the park clear the 70 ft cap. The stay rule is what decides it. Florida State Parks caps a reservation at 14 nights and then wants at least three nights out of the park before the next one (the state park FAQ). The RV leaves with you.

A motorhome can drive itself to the next park. A delivered trailer can’t, unless you brought a vehicle that can tow it. 36 of the 75 listings that reach Curry Hammock are towables. For each of those, night 15 means the host comes back to move it, or the stay ends.

  • 14 nights at Curry Hammock: $672. That is $504 in camping fees, $63 of tax on them, $98 in utility fees and the $6.70 reservation fee. The tax is figured at the 12.5% Monroe County campsite rate; the park says “plus tax” and names no rate. The county’s $2.50 nightly surcharge is already inside the $36.
  • 3 nights out at Jolly Roger: $422 to $489. Its published daily rate of $125 to $145, plus 12.5% tax. It is the one Marathon park that says it works with companies that deliver rented RVs. Three nights there cost 63% to 73% of the fourteen at the state park.
  • Moving the trailer: the host’s quote. At the $4 median per-mile fee hosts publish, one 88-mile run from the Princeton rental lots, the nearest mainland pickup, is $352. Most hosts keep their RVs further north in Miami, so the real fee is the host’s quote. No listing publishes a price for moving a trailer it has already delivered.

So settle it before you book. For 14 nights or fewer, Curry Hammock comes to about $48 a night in park fees, against $141 to $163 at Jolly Roger. For longer, rent a motorhome that can make the move itself, get the host’s price for the move in writing, or book one private park for the whole stay and skip the gap.

For the RVs whose host delivery reaches the Middle Keys, see RV rentals in Marathon. The three Keys state parks that take RVs share one set of stay and booking rules, laid out in renting an RV for a Keys state park.

RVs that fit Curry Hammock

Two tests, both from published figures. The host’s delivery range has to reach the campground in a straight line from where the RV is kept, and the listed length has to clear the campground’s own cap. Outdoorsy does not say whether its range is road miles, so confirm the drop with the host.

The park page: "Maximum RV length = 70 feet." The reservation system agrees.

Listed right now: 71 listings on Outdoorsy with a host delivery range that reaches Curry Hammock campground. 71 of them are 70 ft or shorter. This is the live set, so it moves through the day and can differ from the measured count above.

How the RV gets here

Almost every RV for the Keys is kept in Miami or Homestead and comes down US-1. Only 2 of the 144 listed within 100 miles of Marathon are based in the Keys. So the question is whose delivery reaches this campground, and whether the campground lets a delivered RV in. Card Sound Road tolls by axle and the delivery fees hosts publish are on the trip cost page and the delivery page.

The rules, in the source’s own words

Quoted, because a paraphrase of a limit is how a foot goes missing.

Rule

Every Florida state park

14 nights per stay, 56 nights per six months

The maximum length of stay that one may have for a single reservation is 14 nights total ... you may not reserve more than 56 nights in the same park within a six-month period.

What no official page answers

Each of these was looked for and not found. Ask the office before you book around it.

  • Whether sites have sewer connections: the amenities page lists electric, water and a dump station; the fee page says the utility fee includes sewer.
  • Delivered rentals: no Florida State Parks rule addresses a host dropping off an RV.
  • No boat launch and no boat trailer parking, and powerboats may not be launched. Bring a boat to a private park instead.

Listing counts come from Outdoorsy’s public search, joined to each host’s own delivery range. Florida Keys RV Rentals finds RVs on Outdoorsy. It takes no campsite bookings and is not affiliated with Florida State Parks, Monroe County or the City of Key West.
