Renting an RV for Marathon

At Jolly Roger the number of nights sets the site rate, and a week costs less than seven single nights.

Jolly Roger RV Resort, at 59275 Overseas Highway, is the Marathon park built for a rented RV. It is the only campground in the Keys we found that says it works with companies that rent, deliver and set up RVs, and it will hand over their contact details. It prices by the night, the week and the winter month: $125 to $145, $788 to $914 and $3,366 to $3,698, all before 12.5% tax.

Curry Hammock State Park is the state park choice, with 28 gravel sites, 20, 30 and 50 amp, water and a dump station. It takes big rigs, and like every Florida state park it caps a stay at 14 nights. See Curry Hammock's limits and booking window.

Grassy Key RV Park, at MM 58.7 on the gulf side, closes check-in at 4:30 p.m. and accepts no late arrivals, so a delivery there has to land early. Sun Outdoors Marathon and Coconut Cay publish no length limits or rates. Fiesta Key on Long Key quotes its lowest price, $3,649 a month, for a 12-month standard annual site, plus taxes, fees and utilities. Compare the Marathon campgrounds.

West of town, US-1 crosses the Seven Mile Bridge to the Lower Keys. If you are driving the RV yourself, read what driving the Seven Mile Bridge in an RV involves.

The numbers that decide it in Marathon

derived

Jolly Roger's night, week and month, priced against each other

What we found
Jolly Roger charges $125 to $145 a night and $788 to $914 a week. Seven nights paid one at a time come to $875 to $1,015, so the weekly rate saves $87 to $101, or $98 to $114 once the 12.5% tax is on. The winter month, $3,366 to $3,698, costs less than paying nightly from night 26 at the high end and night 27 at the low end. Each comparison sets low end against low end and high against high.
What to do
Plan in weeks. Six single nights cost $750 to $870, so the seventh night on a weekly rate costs only $38 to $44. Staying 27 nights or more in winter, ask for the monthly rate. A delivered RV pushes the same way, because the host's fee is paid per drop, not per night. El Monte's Princeton lot is 88 road miles from Marathon by OSRM, $352 each way at the typical published $4 a mile: about $50 a night across a week and $12 across 30 nights. Those miles are from the Princeton rental lots, the nearest mainland pickup. Most hosts keep their RVs further north in Miami, so the real fee is the host's quote.
If you skip it
Book 30 winter nights one at a time and you pay $384 to $652 more than the monthly rate, before tax. Book a short stay with delivery and that fee lands on very few nights.

Curry Hammock, for the stays of two weeks or less

What we found
All 75 RVs that can reach Marathon publish a length within Curry Hammock's limit. Florida State Parks caps every stay at 14 nights, with three nights out before the next.
What to do
Up to two weeks, Curry Hammock is the cheaper site. Longer than that, Jolly Roger, which takes monthly stays. Jolly Roger publishes no length limit, so no fit count is given for it. 75 RVs can reach it.
If you skip it
Book a month across two state park stays and the RV has to leave for three nights in between. For a delivered trailer that means paying the host to come back and move it, at a fee they set.

Staying longer, and the tax

Curry Hammock allows 14 nights per stay and 56 in six months, with no seasonal sites. Jolly Roger's winter monthly rate takes a 50% deposit, refundable with 30 days notice. Grassy Key takes a 50% deposit on monthly stays and reserves a site type, not a site number.

Campsite tax in Monroe County

Boyd's and Jolly Roger both quote 12.5% on top of their rates. A long stay can fall outside the state tax two ways: a written lease for longer than 6 months signed up front, or 6 months of continuous residence with the tax paid for those months. The statute names tourist and trailer camps, not RV parks, in that section, so confirm how your park applies it with the Florida Department of Revenue. State park camping fees in Monroe County already include a $2.50 nightly county surcharge.

Jolly Roger's rates exclude 12.5% tax, and that figure is the state, county surtax and tourist tax together. A stay over six months can fall outside the state tax, which matters only if you are staying the winter.

Where the sources stop

  • Jolly Roger publishes no length limit and no booking window.
  • Grassy Key publishes no length limit and no rates on its own site. A directory claims 62 ft; we have not confirmed it.
  • Whether Coconut Cay rents RVs at all is unclear from its own pages. Its rentals page describes sites only.
  • No source permits overnight RV parking outside a campground. The City of Marathon's own rules were not part of our research; county code bans RV camping on the US-1 right of way overnight.
