RV rental for the Florida Keys state parks

Reviewed by Ben Kiser, RV rental operator and fleet consultant.

Three Keys state parks take RVs: John Pennekamp in Key Largo, Curry Hammock in Marathon and Bahia Honda in the Lower Keys. A site is $36 a night plus a $7 RV fee and tax. Move between the three, 14 nights at each, and the park rules allow a rented RV 24 weeks of winter in state parks for about $43.48 a night before tax.

The RVs are easy to find. The sites are not. Book each site first, then an RV that suits all three parks.

Local rule

Non-residents book a month after Florida residents

Florida residents can reserve state park campsites 11 months ahead and everyone else 10, with new dates released daily at 8 a.m. Eastern. The Curry Hammock and Bahia Honda park pages only say 11 months, so a visitor from out of state who goes by the park page is already a month behind.

A winter in three state parks, 14 nights at a time

Each reservation stops at 14 nights, you need 3 nights out before you come back to the same park, and no park gives you more than 56 nights in six months. Rotate Pennekamp, Curry Hammock and Bahia Honda in turn and you are away from each park for 28 nights before you return, so the nights-out rule never bites. Four rounds reach the 56-night limit at all three at once: 168 nights, 24 weeks, on 12 reservations.

Each 14-night stay is 14 nights at $43 plus the $6.70 reservation fee, $608.70, which is $43.48 a night. The whole winter comes to $7,304 before tax. The parks say "plus tax" without naming the rate. If it is the 12.5% the private parks quote, it adds $4.50 a night on the $36, $756 over the winter, and the parks do not say whether the $7 fee is taxed. Jolly Roger's cheapest winter month, spread over 30 nights, is $112.20 a night before its tax.

The RV has to suit all three parks. 71 of the 81 listings that serve the Keys can reach all three, and 70 of those are listed at 40 ft or under. That is Pennekamp's "most sites" figure, and it also clears Curry Hammock's 70 ft and Bahia Honda's park-wide 48, as long as your Bahia Honda site is in Buttonwood. Book Sandspur instead and the count drops to 11: 10 towables and one drivable. Counts are from Outdoorsy listings on October 8, 2026.

12 stays means 11 moves. In a drivable you make them yourself, and 35 drivables suit all three with Buttonwood. With a towable, unless you tow it yourself, the host moves it every 14 nights and each move is a delivery the host quotes. Get the host's agreement and price for all 11 in writing before you book the first site.

Which rentals suit each park

Pennekamp's page says most sites take 40 ft, and 80 of the 81 RVs that can reach it are listed that short. Its reservation system lists 62, so the site you are given is what has to fit. Curry Hammock takes 70 ft, and all 75 RVs that reach it qualify.

Bahia Honda is three loops with three answers. Sandspur stops at 23 ft hitch to bumper, and only 11 of the 71 RVs that reach the park are listed that short, 10 of them towables. Outdoorsy does not say whether a trailer's listed length includes the hitch, so get the hitch-to-bumper figure from the host. Buttonwood takes larger rigs, and Bayside sits behind a bridge with 6 ft 8 in of clearance.

Long Key State Park has hike-in tent sites only. It takes no RVs of any size.

What a stay costs, and how long it can be

Every site is $36 a night plus tax, a $7 nightly RV utility fee and a $6.70 reservation fee that is not refunded. A week comes to $307.70 plus tax. The longest stay allowed, 14 nights, is $608.70 plus tax. Then you need 3 nights out of the park before you can come back.

Cancel more than 24 hours out and the parks keep a $17.75 fee plus the $6.70. Inside 24 hours they keep the first night too.

Delivered rentals and the parks

Florida State Parks publishes no rule on a host delivering a rented RV, at any Keys park or system-wide. Call the park office before you book a host who drops the RV off, and agree with the host when they will arrive. Check-in is 3 p.m. and Pennekamp asks you to contact the park before 5 p.m. on arrival day.
