Hurricane Season RV Rental in the Florida Keys

Reviewed by Ben Kiser, RV rental operator and fleet consultant.

Summer and early autumn in the Keys by RV: quieter parks and lower rates. The season is also hurricane season, so pick the host and the park by what happens to your money if you are told to leave.

How this trip works

The quiet months are cheaper. A full-hookup RV site at Boyd's, for your own RV, starts at $135 a day off-season against $200 in peak. Jolly Roger runs a $75 interior site special through November 15, against a standard daily rate from $125. Those months sit inside the Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to November 30.

Visitors and RVs leave first. Monroe County's plan for a Category 3 to 5 storm orders non-residents, visitors, RVs and travel trailers out in Phase 1, about 48 hours before tropical-storm winds, and says state parks and campgrounds should close then or sooner. The only copy of that wording found is a November 2025 draft amendment to the county's comprehensive plan. For weaker storms the county decides case by case.

The order moves you. It does not refund you. Bluewater Key publishes a full refund for unused nights if a mandatory evacuation is issued during your stay, and for a stay inside NOAA's 5-day forecast cone. Key Largo Kampground's published schedule gives nothing back on less than 30 days notice and does not mention storms.

The rental has its own terms. 20 of the 81 listings that can reach the Keys carry a flexible cancellation policy, 16 moderate, 29 strict and 16 the host's own. And a delivered trailer cannot leave on its own. If yours was dropped and set up by the host, ask before you book how the host handles an evacuation order.

The fact that decides it

What the source says
Monroe County's plan orders visitors, RVs and travel trailers out first, about 48 hours before tropical-storm winds, for a Category 3 to 5 storm (November 2025 draft amendment). Bluewater Key refunds unused nights on a mandatory evacuation. Key Largo Kampground refunds nothing inside 30 days and does not mention storms.
What to do about it
Choose the park by its storm terms and the listing by its cancellation policy before choosing the RV. 29 of 81 listings carry a strict policy.
If you do not
Ordered out of the Keys with both the site and the rental still paid for.

What the RV gets you here

  • Off-season site rates: an RV site at Boyd's from $135 a day, Jolly Roger's $75 interior special through November 15.
  • Boyd's off-season runs from May 1 to October 14 on its current rate sheet. Its own on-site RV rentals are priced separately and start higher.
  • A drivable RV is its own way out, if you keep it fuelled.

Before you book

  1. 1Pick a listing with a flexible cancellation policy for a stay between June 1 and November 30.
  2. 2Ask the park, in writing, what it refunds if a mandatory evacuation is ordered. Only Bluewater Key publishes an answer.
  3. 3With a delivered towable, ask the host who moves it, and how fast, if visitors and RVs are ordered out.
  4. 4Monroe County shelters are pet friendly, per the county FAQ.
  5. 5Confirm the current evacuation wording with Monroe County Emergency Management. The plan text found is a draft.

Questions people ask

When is hurricane season in the Florida Keys?

June 1 to November 30, per the National Hurricane Center.

Do RVs have to leave the Keys before a hurricane?

For a Category 3 to 5 storm, Monroe County's plan orders non-residents, visitors, RVs and travel trailers out first, about 48 hours before tropical-storm winds. The only copy found is a November 2025 draft amendment, and orders for weaker storms are made case by case. Monroe County Emergency Management has the current wording.

Will a Keys campground refund me if there is a hurricane?

Bluewater Key publishes a full refund for unused nights on a mandatory evacuation, and for a stay inside NOAA's 5-day cone. No other campground checked mentions storms in its cancellation terms. Key Largo Kampground's schedule refunds nothing on less than 30 days notice. Ask any other park in writing.

Who moves a delivered trailer in an evacuation?

Not published by anyone. A travel trailer delivered and set up by the host cannot leave without a tow vehicle. Ask the host before you book what happens if visitors and RVs are ordered out.
