Camper Van Rental in the Florida Keys

Reviewed by Ben Kiser, RV rental operator and fleet consultant.

A camper van is a van with a bed and a galley, for one or two people who want to drive the Overseas Highway themselves. In the Keys the choice is thin: 2 can serve the islands, at $175 and $245 a night.

Camper Van rentals you can book for the Keys

These come straight from the marketplace, so the set changes between visits. Each one is published by its owner and booked on the marketplace that published it. The live feed labels camper vans as Class B, so the set below mixes the two classes. The counts on this page keep them apart.

Which of these suit each Keys campground

Of the 5 listed right now that publish a size, here is how many sit inside each published limit.

Leo's counts bumpers and racks, and Key West's street rule also caps width. Ask the host for both.

Some links on this page are affiliate links. A booking made after following one earns a commission from the marketplace. It adds nothing to your price and does not change which listings appear here.

What a Camper Van costs for a Keys stay

Seven nights at the $210 median is $1,470, $700 more than a week in the middle travel trailer. What the extra buys is the ability to drive, and in the Keys that is worth less than it sounds, because every night still has to be on a campground site. No source this site checked permits overnight RV parking outside a campground. Monroe County presumes an RV parked on the US-1 right of way overnight is camping, and Key West allows no overnight parking in its public lots. Islamorada, Marathon, Layton and Key Colony Beach rules were not researched, so ask the city clerk before you plan a night anywhere else.

How a Camper Van gets to your site

Both offer delivery, and neither publishes a delivery range that reaches Key West. Most renters collect on the mainland and drive down. El Monte RV in Princeton also rents a Class B camper van, pickup only, Monday to Friday.

How RV delivery to the Keys works

Where a Camper Van can stay in the Keys

The obvious assumption is that the smallest class goes everywhere. Here it does not, and the reason is delivery rather than size. Neither host's published delivery range reaches Bahia Honda or Key West, so for the Lower Keys you collect the van and drive it down. If you do, the 23 ft van sits right at Sandspur's 23 ft limit and the 24.5 ft one is over it. Neither is 20 ft or under, so neither may park on a Key West city street. By length, both sit well inside Pennekamp's and Curry Hammock's limits.

  • The park page says most sites take 40 ft. Both whose hosts deliver that far are listed inside it. The reservation system lists 62, so the site you are assigned is what has to fit.

  • The cap is 70 ft. The one whose host delivers that far is listed inside that limit. Length is not the problem here; the 14-night limit is.

  • Sandspur stops at 23 ft, hitch to bumper. None of this class has a host whose published delivery range reaches it. Buttonwood, the loop for larger rigs, publishes no cap of its own.

  • Leo's takes 42 ft, counting bumpers and racks. None of this class has a host whose published delivery range reaches it. None of this class is 20 ft or under, so none may park on a Key West city street.

What you get in a Camper Van

Also listed as a camper van conversion. Counts are what the hosts publish on their own listings, so confirm anything that decides the trip on the listing itself.

Sleeping

Sleeps a median of 3. One sleeps two and one sleeps four.

Size

23 ft and 24.5 ft, the two listed.

Licence

Florida's licence rules for driving a motorhome are not in the sources this site checked. Ask the host what their insurance requires, and confirm with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles before you book.

Driving it

It drives like a tall van. Bluewater Key RV Resort bans driving an RV once checked in but exempts Class B vans, so ask whether it counts your camper van as one. Its 16 ft minimum length is cleared by both listed vans. One of the two accepts a renter aged 21.

What is aboard

  • A toilet on 1 of the 2, and an inside shower on neither
  • Air conditioning on 1
  • Pet friendly on 2, set by the host

Who it suits

  • One or two people driving the whole chain
  • A trip with more driving than sitting
  • Renters who would rather not wait on a delivery window

Camper Van rental questions

The 2 Camper Van listings that can serve the Keys run $175 to $245 a night, with the middle of the market at $210. Seven nights at that rate is $1,470 before tax and the host's fees. The campsite is a separate bill: a Keys state park is $36 a night plus tax, a $7 RV utility fee and a $6.70 reservation fee, and private parks add 12.5% tax to their published rates.

2 of the 2 listings offer delivery, at a fee and to a range each host sets, and 0 reach as far as Key West. Jolly Roger in Marathon says it works with companies that deliver and set up RVs. Florida State Parks publishes no rule on delivered rentals, and most private parks say nothing, so ask the park office before you book the RV.

In the Sandspur loop, 0 of the 0 Camper Van listings that reach Bahia Honda are listed at 23 ft or under, the loop's limit measured hitch to bumper. Buttonwood takes larger rigs and publishes no cap of its own; the reservation system's park-wide maximum is 48.

Only at a campground. Key West code keeps any RV over 20 ft long or 7 ft wide off city streets, occupied or not, and bans sleeping in a vehicle on public property. None of the 2 Camper Van listings is 20 ft or under. Boyd's on Stock Island, Leo's, Bluewater Key and Geiger Key are the parks to look at.

Sleeps a median of 3. One sleeps two and one sleeps four. Jolly Roger allows six people per site, so count heads against the campground as well as the RV.

Florida's licence rules for driving a motorhome are not in the sources this site checked. Ask the host what their insurance requires, and confirm with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles before you book.

Book the site, then pick the Camper Van

In the Keys the campsites run out before the RVs do. Hold the site you want, then open a listing, put your dates in and ask the host about delivery to that address.
