RV Rental in Key Largo and Islamorada

Reviewed by Ben Kiser, RV rental operator and fleet consultant.

Key Largo is the first key you reach, and the easiest one to get an RV to. Every RV that can serve the Keys can reach it, coming down US-1 from Miami and Homestead, and John Pennekamp is right there with full hookups at every site.

  • What you can rent: Travel trailers, Class C and Class A motorhomes and a few camper vans: 81 RVs on Outdoorsy whose hosts deliver this far, most of them from Miami and Homestead.
  • Roughly what it costs: Outdoorsy day rates on October 8, 2026: $68 to $1,500 a night, about $165 for a typical one. Class moves it most: trailers run about $110, Class A about $385. The host's delivery fee, the site and 12.5% campsite tax come on top.
  • What happens next: Book the campsite first. Then choose an RV whose host delivers to that park, and confirm the drop in writing.

Renting an RV for Key Largo

Under 25, the RV is easy to rent and Key Largo Kampground still will not check you in.

Most people renting for Key Largo want a week near the reef. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park has 42 sites, each with 30 and 50 amp, water and sewer, for $36 a night plus tax, a $7 RV utility fee and a $6.70 reservation fee. It caps a stay at 14 nights, like every Florida state park. See what fits at Pennekamp.

The private parks fill the rest of the Upper Keys. Key Largo Kampground has full hookups and its own rule about who checks in. Keys Palms at MM 104 admits only licensed and insured vendors, which is a question to put to any host who offers to drop the RV there. Sun Outdoors Key Largo at MM 97.5 has 35 full hookup sites.

Islamorada is covered here because one RV park there clears our checks: Sun Outdoors Islamorada, on the Old Highway. Its page publishes no length limit, hookups or rates, so ask the office before you match an RV to it. Further down, Long Key State Park takes tents only. Read why Long Key is not an option.

Weekends go first. On the Thursday we checked, Pennekamp's reservation system showed zero sites for the weekend ahead. Florida residents can book 11 months ahead and everyone else 10, so a visitor from out of state is always a month behind. Plan a monthly stay instead if two weeks will not be enough.

The numbers that decide it in Key Largo

cross-referenced

The age rule a 21-year-old renter meets at the gate

What we found
Key Largo Kampground says the guest checking in must be at least 25. On Outdoorsy, 31 of the 81 RVs that can reach Key Largo will rent to a driver of 21, and the other 50 want 25.
What to do
If you are 21 to 24, you can rent one of those 31 RVs and still be turned away at this park. Book Pennekamp instead, where the state parks' rule is only that anyone under 18 needs a responsible adult staying on site, or get another park's age rule in writing before you book the RV.
If you skip it
Key Largo Kampground refunds nothing inside 30 days of arrival and half from 31 to 59. Find out late and you lose the site, with a delivered RV and no campsite for it. No source permits overnight RV parking outside a campground. Monroe County treats an RV on the US-1 right of way between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. as camping, and the rules in Islamorada, Marathon, Layton and Key Colony Beach were not part of our research.

Pennekamp's two length figures, and how many RVs they touch

What we found
The park page says most sites take 40 ft and a few a little more. The reservation system lists a maximum trailer length of 62. Of the 81 RVs that can reach Pennekamp, 80 publish a length of 40 ft or less.
What to do
For almost everyone the conflict does not matter: pick any of those 80. It decides the booking for the 1 listing over 40 ft, and for anyone whose trailer length leaves out the hitch, because Outdoorsy does not say whether it is included.
If you skip it
A rig the reservation system accepts can still be too long for the site you are given, and the site is what has to fit. Sites 24 to 32 also take slide-outs on one side only.

Getting to Key Largo

From Florida City, US-1 runs south onto Key Largo. Card Sound Road is the other way on, tolled and cashless, and a truck towing a trailer pays for every axle. Price the toll by axle.

OSRM puts El Monte's Princeton lot 35 road miles and 51 minutes from Key Largo. Cruise America's Miami (South) counter is in Princeton too. Keys Palms is at MM 104, Pennekamp at 102601 Overseas Highway, Key Largo Kampground at 101551, Sun Outdoors Key Largo at MM 97.5, and Sun Outdoors Islamorada at 87395 Old Highway.

Staying longer, and the tax

Pennekamp stops at 14 nights per stay, needs three nights out before the next one, and allows 56 nights in six months. Key Largo Kampground takes two-month bookings with a one-month deposit. Calusa Campground near MM 101.5 is an owner community and shows no booking for visitors.

Campsite tax in Monroe County

Boyd's and Jolly Roger both quote 12.5% on top of their rates. A long stay can fall outside the state tax two ways: a written lease for longer than 6 months signed up front, or 6 months of continuous residence with the tax paid for those months. The statute names tourist and trailer camps, not RV parks, in that section, so confirm how your park applies it with the Florida Department of Revenue. State park camping fees in Monroe County already include a $2.50 nightly county surcharge.

A campsite night in Key Largo or Islamorada carries 12.5% tax on top of the rate. The RV rental itself is taxed separately: Florida charges 6% on vehicle rentals. Our sources do not establish whether Monroe County's 1.5% surtax applies to the rental, so ask the Florida Department of Revenue before you budget for it.

Where the sources stop

  • Key Largo Kampground publishes no length limit, rates, booking window or delivery policy. Ask the office before you book an RV for it.
  • Florida State Parks publishes no rule on a host dropping off a rented RV at Pennekamp, and does not say which sites take more than 40 ft.
  • Sun Outdoors Key Largo and Islamorada publish no length limits or rates on the pages we could read.

Key Largo RV rental questions

The RVs that can reach Key Largo list from $68 to $1,500 a night, about $165 for a typical one. Travel trailers run about $110, Class C about $256 and Class A about $385. Add the host's delivery fee, then the site: Pennekamp is $36 a night plus tax, a $7 RV utility fee and a $6.70 reservation fee. Work out the whole trip.

Yes, from 31 of the 81 RVs that reach Key Largo, which accept a renter of 21. The park is the catch: Key Largo Kampground requires the guest checking in to be at least 25. Florida State Parks only asks that anyone under 18 has a responsible adult staying on site, so Pennekamp works. Other Upper Keys parks do not publish an age rule.

Almost certainly. The park says most sites take 40 ft, and 80 of the 81 RVs that can reach it publish that length or less. The reservation system lists 62, which disagrees with the park page, so the site you are assigned is what has to fit. Florida State Parks publishes no rule on delivered rentals, so ask the park office before the host drives down.

Sun Outdoors Islamorada, at 87395 Old Highway, is the one Islamorada RV park we could verify. It allows pets and publishes no length limit, hookups or rates on its page. Long Key State Park, further down the road, takes tents only.

Yes. Every one of the 81 RVs counted for Key Largo reaches it by its host's published delivery range, measured in a straight line, which is the generous reading. 37 listings publish a per-mile fee, typically $4 a mile. The rest quote on the listing. Read how Keys delivery works.
