Renting an RV for Homestead
The RVs live here, and the pickup clock decides how far down the Keys you sleep tonight.
The two drive-yourself counters are in Princeton, just north of Homestead. Cruise America's Miami (South) lot rents three sizes of Class C, the largest 30 ft. El Monte RV, on SW 248th Street, rents Class C in four sizes, a Class B camper van and a Class A, with the generator included. Both rent to drivers of 21. Neither delivers.
The Outdoorsy hosts are the bigger pool. Your House on Wheels, in Cutler Bay, is a dealer with 17 published vehicles, and RVsOnTheRun, in Miami, names Keys trips on its listing. Further north in Miami, Indie Campers rents camper vans with unlimited mileage and one-way drop-offs, 65 road miles from Key Largo by OSRM. Cruise America's Miami (North) lot is about the same distance.

- What we found
- El Monte's standard pickup is after 1 p.m., Monday to Friday, with no after-hours pickups. OSRM puts Key West 3 hours 33 minutes away with no stops, so the earliest arrival in Key West is 4:33 p.m. Key Largo, 51 minutes away, is 1:51 p.m.
- What to do
- Sleep the first night in the Upper Keys, or book a Lower Keys park whose check-in you have confirmed in writing. Bluewater Key, at MM 14, closes at 5 p.m. and refuses late arrivals. Grassy Key, in Marathon, closes check-in at 4:30. There is no Saturday start at El Monte.
- If you skip it
- Miss a check-in and the night is gone, with no campsite for the RV. No source permits overnight RV parking outside a campground. Monroe County treats an RV on the US-1 right of way between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. as camping, and the rules in Islamorada, Marathon, Layton and Key Colony Beach were not part of our research. Key West bars sleeping in a vehicle on public property.

Picking up yourself against waiting for delivery

- 56 RVs sit within 15 miles of Florida City. Of the RVs that can serve the Keys, 43 have a delivery range that reaches Key West. 37 listings publish a per-mile fee, typically $4.
- What to do
- If you can collect and drive, the host's delivery range stops limiting you, and the choice is the whole local pool. If you need the RV brought to Key West, you are choosing from the hosts who go that far. Check each listing for pickup, because hosts set it.
- If you skip it
- Delivery to the far end is real money. At the typical published rate, the 137 road miles from El Monte's Princeton lot to Key West come to $548, and whether the host charges that each way is their call. Those miles are from the Princeton rental lots, the nearest mainland pickup. Most hosts keep their RVs further north in Miami, so the real fee is the host's quote.

Where to pick up, and the road south
El Monte is at 13700 SW 248th Street in Princeton. Cruise America's Miami (South) page also places it in Princeton, on South Dixie Highway; its older listings say Cutler Bay, so confirm the lot when you book.
From Princeton, US-1 runs south through Homestead and Florida City and onto Key Largo: 35 road miles and 51 minutes from El Monte by OSRM. Card Sound Road is the tolled alternative onto north Key Largo, cashless, with the toll rising per axle. Price the toll.

Homestead is in Miami-Dade County, so Monroe County's 5% tourist development tax and 1.5% surtax do not apply to a night here. Miami-Dade's own rates are not recorded in our sources, so no combined figure is printed. Read the county line on the Department of Revenue's surtax chart. Most people renting here sleep in the Keys, where a campsite carries 12.5%.

Cruise America's Miami (South) lot and El Monte RV are both in Princeton, just north of Homestead, and both are pickup only. Outdoorsy adds 56 RVs within 15 miles of Florida City, from hosts such as Your House on Wheels in Cutler Bay.
No. El Monte's Miami location hands over Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with standard pickups after 1 p.m., and it cannot do after-hours pickups. Plan a weekday start, or use an Outdoorsy host who sets their own handover times.
OSRM puts Key West 137 road miles and 3 hours 33 minutes from El Monte's Princeton lot, with no stops, and Key Largo 35 miles and 51 minutes. The Department of Transportation publishes no Florida City to Key West figure that we found.
