A fifth-wheel trailer parked on a wide gravel pad

Fifth Wheel Rental in the Florida Keys

Reviewed by Ben Kiser, RV rental operator and fleet consultant.

A fifth wheel is the big towable with a raised bedroom over the hitch, built for a family that wants room to spread out on one site for a week or more. In the Keys there is almost no choice: one is listed, at $160 a night.

Fifth Wheel rentals you can book for the Keys

These come straight from the marketplace, so the set changes between visits. Each one is published by its owner and booked on the marketplace that published it. The live feed labels toy haulers as fifth wheels too, so the set below can include one.

What a Fifth Wheel costs for a Keys stay

Seven nights at $160 is $1,120 before tax, fees and delivery, which is $672 less than a week in the middle Class C. With one listing, the price is that host's price and the dates are that host's calendar. It publishes a weekly discount.

How a Fifth Wheel gets to your site

The host delivers, from the mainland. Its published delivery range reaches Key West. A fifth wheel needs a pickup with a bed hitch to move it, which no listing rents you, so delivery is the realistic way to get one onto a Keys site.

How RV delivery to the Keys works

Where a Fifth Wheel can stay in the Keys

At 35 ft it clears Pennekamp's 40 ft, Curry Hammock's 70 ft and Leo's 42 ft as listed, and it is far too long for Bahia Honda's Sandspur loop. Boyd's on Stock Island takes RVs to 45 ft in select sites, so ask which site before you book.

  • The park page says most sites take 40 ft. The one whose host delivers that far is listed inside that limit. The reservation system lists 62, so the site you are assigned is what has to fit.

  • The cap is 70 ft. The one whose host delivers that far is listed inside that limit. Length is not the problem here; the 14-night limit is.

  • Sandspur stops at 23 ft, hitch to bumper. The one whose host delivers that far is listed over that limit. Buttonwood, the loop for larger rigs, publishes no cap of its own.

  • Leo's takes 42 ft, counting bumpers and racks. The one whose host delivers that far is listed inside that limit. On Key West city streets the 20 ft limit counts an RV and the vehicle towing it together, so a towed trailer never qualifies.

Every Keys state park caps a stay at 14 nights, and Long Key takes no RVs at all. Booking a state park site with a rented RV

What you get in a Fifth Wheel

Also listed as a fifth-wheel trailer. Counts are what the hosts publish on their own listings, so confirm anything that decides the trip on the listing itself.

Sleeping

The one listed sleeps 10.

Size

35 ft as listed. Outdoorsy does not say whether that includes the hitch.

Licence

You do not tow it unless you want to. 1 of the 1 listings offer delivery, so the hitch, the tow vehicle and the drive down US-1 are theirs. If you collect it yourself instead, the tow rating of your own vehicle is your problem to check, and the host is the one with the trailer's loaded weight.

Towing and handover

Nothing to drive once it is on the site. Moving it takes a pickup with a fifth wheel hitch in the bed, which stays the host's job when they deliver.

What is aboard

  • A toilet, an inside shower and air conditioning on the one listed
  • A raised forward bedroom over the hitch
  • An onboard generator

Who it suits

  • A big family on one site for a week or longer
  • Renters who want a separate bedroom on a towable they never have to tow
  • Anyone who can book around a single host's calendar

Fifth Wheel rental questions

The 1 Fifth Wheel listings that can serve the Keys run $160 to $160 a night, with the middle of the market at $160. Seven nights at that rate is $1,120 before tax and the host's fees. The campsite is a separate bill: a Keys state park is $36 a night plus tax, a $7 RV utility fee and a $6.70 reservation fee, and private parks add 12.5% tax to their published rates.

1 of the 1 listings offer delivery, at a fee and to a range each host sets, and 1 reach as far as Key West. Jolly Roger in Marathon says it works with companies that deliver and set up RVs. Florida State Parks publishes no rule on delivered rentals, and most private parks say nothing, so ask the park office before you book the RV.

In the Sandspur loop, 0 of the 1 Fifth Wheel listings that reach Bahia Honda are listed at 23 ft or under, the loop's limit measured hitch to bumper. Outdoorsy does not say whether a trailer's listed length includes the hitch, so get the hitch-to-bumper figure from the host. Buttonwood takes larger rigs and publishes no cap of its own; the reservation system's park-wide maximum is 48.

Only at a campground. Key West code keeps any RV over 20 ft long or 7 ft wide off city streets, occupied or not, and bans sleeping in a vehicle on public property. None of the 1 Fifth Wheel listings is 20 ft or under. Boyd's on Stock Island, Leo's, Bluewater Key and Geiger Key are the parks to look at.

The one listed sleeps 10. Jolly Roger allows six people per site, so count heads against the campground as well as the RV.

Book the site, then pick the Fifth Wheel

In the Keys the campsites run out before the RVs do. Hold the site you want, then open a listing, put your dates in and ask the host about delivery to that address.
